I'm pleased to announce the publication of my article, "'A Grand Informal Durbar': Henry Irving and the Coronation of Edward VII," which appears in the current issue of The Journal of Victorian Culture. -- The full citation is as follows: Journal of Victorian Culture 8.2 (Autumn 2003): 257-291. -- Here's a brief abstract: In the summer of 1902, Sir Henry Irving’s distinguished career at the Lyceum Theatre was drawing to a close. One final event, however, would underscore the position to which the actor-manager had risen as a player on the world stage. On 3 July, Irving hosted a reception for several hundred colonial administrators and native subjects of the empire who had converged on London for the coronation of Edward VII. Held on the most famous stage in England, this event illustrates the intricate relationship between spectacle and spectatorship, theatre and theatricality, audience and body politic. -- I would be happy to send a paper copy of this article to members without access to an academic library; please contact me at the address below. -- Kristan Tetens, 205 Linton Hall, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan 48823, USA; telephone: (517) 333-4064; e-mail: [email protected].
