See two articles by Alan Hughes, 'Henry Irving’s Finances: The Lyceum Accounts, 1878-1899', Nineteenth Century Theatre Research 1.2 (Autumn 1973): 79-87, and 'The Lyceum Staff: A Victorian Theatrical Organisation', Theatre Notebook 28 (1974): 11-17. Both have information on HI's business practices.
Online finding aids (e.g., Palmer's Index to the Times or the Waterloo Directory) might be of help in locating fugitive information in the popular press.
There's still no substitute for flipping through the pages (or cranking the microfilm reel) of theatre-related periodicals like The Era, many of which are available at the British Library, Colindale.
