I am working on the hypothesis that Conan Doyle may have partially modelled Sherlock Holmes on Irving. I'd be interested to know of any book or article that explores in any detail their meetings at the time that Irving bought Doyle's "A Straggler of '15", which became the oft performed "Waterloo" in which Irving played Gregory Brewster.
