SHAKESPEARE DAUERREOTYPES – Our member Bruce Cleave is helping an associate who is trying to locate any surviving originals of 1852 UK and 1858 USA. Thomas Tallis & Sons began issuing Shakespeare illustrations with engravings of actors in their famous roles, mainly portraits of Phelps’ company. Four years later an American firm followed this example with engravings of actors of New York and Philadelphia, also based on Daguerreotypes.
