A Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors, Irena Sedlecka was born in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, in 1928. After training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, she was awarded the prestigious prize of the City of Prague and the State Prize of Czechoslovakia. Commissioned theatrical portrait heads include Laurence Olivier, Donald Sinden, Paul Eddington, and Richard Briers. In 1992 her work was shown at the Czech Embassy in London as part of an exhibition devoted to five distinguished Czech emigré sculptors, for since the Prague spring of 1968 Irena Sedlecka has lived and worked exclusively in London. The huge figure of Freddie Mercury over the canopy at the Dominion Theatre, London, where We Will Rock You is currently playing, is a scaled-up copy of Miss Sedlecka’s original statue overlooking Lake Geneva.
